Day 21

Date April 2, 2013

Day 23. DONE…..

Sorry for the sporadic entries of late. But Done is Done at least.

Day 19

Date April 2, 2013

I have been far too overwhelmed trying to get additional work finished before the show tomorrow that I didnt post. So here is a sequence from day 19 to the penultimate day day 26. Narrative will have to wait till later.

Day 18

Date April 2, 2013

Filling in the blanks. Sometimes this stage has all the tedium of a one-sided Sudoku tourney. The long rectilinear format doesn’t suit quick work. It is difficult not smearing previous work with the end of my mahl stick. Far too many times do I find the leather covered ball end covered in the shape of a previously painted area. Of course by then I have left stamp prints in multiple places over lighter area… then to clean them I need mineral spirits which can lift the under color if it isnt more than a few days old……

Day 17

Date April 2, 2013

Very little to say at this stage. Im starting to work tighter in the small fractured sections of the crimson. The progress is hard to see as it is absorbed by the vibrancy of the tonality about itself.

image

Day 16

Date April 2, 2013

Some attention is now paid to the middle. I do find that with the usage of a rotating easle that the middle the last section too see much work. This problem is just increased with the usage of rectangular canvases like this 3×6.

Day 15

Date April 2, 2013

Some success is showing with the framing elements coming together. The blue edging is intended to give a sense of both water and air. not subtle in the slightest, but it hard to make ochre feel like cold and ethereal.

image

Day 14

Date March 29, 2013

Relatively uninterrupted flow of intent from the work of yesterday. I am constantly aware of the lack of progress in the middle and far left, but I ma unsure what those areas require as of today.

Current audio book accompaniment is ” Deborah Harkness – A Discovery of Witches”. A nice Anne Rice(Early years) like vampire tale. What better for early morning work when few others are about.

Day 13

Date March 29, 2013

Between the superficial annoyances of daily existence. It is difficult to make progress sometimes when beset by the mundane forces of bill paying and the fear of alien abduction. Or so the cats tell me.

I have introduced a lot of middle tone cools and light warms in the right side. This is intended to offset the stark reds laying heavy on the left. So far these intentions are less than apparent and will or will not work as the white disappear.

Day 12

Date March 22, 2013

Starting to feel the pressure to get this painting done and hopefully one additional in less than a month. Unfortunately you can only work so fast before the errors errors mount and it becomes 2 steps backwards to every one forwards.

image

Day 10

Date March 22, 2013

Long day and I forgot to shoot Day 10, so here is a combined bit of chronology. Finally starting to feel as though the wide open space is getting broken up a bit. Perhaps my painting is akin to post fall of the USSR map making.

Day 09

Date March 21, 2013

Couple of days behind in updates. Starting to become much more aware of the color movement . Deviations in color have less overall impact on the whole.“Goodbye Blue Sky” seems to sum up the feeling of this days work.

Instead of Pink Floyd I have had a bit of Led Zeppelin on the on the mind for the last day or so. I have put away Jeeves for the moment and am listening to ” When Giants Walked the Earth” by Mick Wall. I am rather fond of music based biographies and this one can be somewhat interesting, if you an get beyond the fawning.

Day 08

Date March 21, 2013

No pithy comments for this days Pic.

image

Day 07

Date March 21, 2013

I am finding the color washes that I created to establish a palette map causing some problem. I was lost in the beginning without a sense of the color choice that awaited me, but now that the macro work has begun there is some difficulty with it. In many ways it is like a music scratch track that is intended to be temporary, but you can never stop haring in in every revision.

No matter how much work I do it blends into the temporary color wash. That can be disheartening when gauging progress from day to day.

Day 06

Date March 21, 2013

I have fallen behind once again in my daily posts.Once again I winge at the daily factors of life that distract me from my appointed task. Plus the annoyance of many failed USB cables that prevent me from downloading my camera shots.

image

Day 05

Date March 15, 2013

I find myself musing about the affect environment has upon a painting style like mine. There is little doubt how music relates to work that is of an immediate nature, but work that takes weeks is far different. For the most part I find myself watching( listening) to animation which is mostly dialogue driven. Favs are Family Guy, South Park, Undergrads, Oblongs, Dilbert, Mission Hill, Daria… the list is quite long….Recently I have spent more time with audio Books than my stash of Animation. It is amazing how how the hours tick away while listening to a well done series. Although I have found a number of badly done ones too.

Right now I am enjoying the works of P.G. Wodehouse and his voluminous Jeeves series of british drawing room comedies from the ’30s. Just finished “Jeeves in the Morning” and am onto ” Carry on, Jeeves”.

Day 04

Date March 15, 20132

Abstract additions of color are the only way to start this stage. It is similar to the timidity one finds themselves at when confronted by a blank canvas. Direction can only be found by reacting to a point, splotch or color laid upon the surface. Reaction is one of three variants + or – of light or change in base tone.

image

Day 03

Date March 11, 2013

Palette choices can be daunting at this stage. Although the wrong choices can waste a great deal of energy and reap a fascinating degree of frustration. Original choices were Black, Blue, Red and Yellow. When it was pointed out that I have been using a lot of yellow recently as opposed to shying away from it, as in the past. So, at the moment Yellow as a dominate color has been tabled…. well see how that fares.

image

Day 02

Date March 11, 2013

The excuses I made concerning the inability to connect with the last painting I started seem to be a systemic at the moment. I thought I had a very distinct map of where “Fail” was going to go, but all that went out the window after living with the final sketch.

I no longer have comfort of working 6-9 month’s on a single painting, I need to connect with the subject much faster ( “much farther” real genius quote). At this point I am just trying to get a sense of moment

image

Day 01

Date March 3, 2013

I’m starting with a canvas size and aspect ratio that I rarely use. Square seems to be my preference, but the subject of this work concerns “Hubris” so a boring safe square wouldn’t set well. At least its not 13′ canvas like some of my previous non-square work.

Once all the preliminary fact gathering and photo morgueing is finished I can get to what actually consists of Day 1 work. Graphite on canvas, long tedious hours of sketching from a opaque projector each image is done in turn.

New Work Start after Slump

Date March 3, 2013

I have been distracted by non art related things for far too long. Part of that was a block concerning the Musik painting that I had been detailing here. Sometimes when you start a project on the wrong foot it becomes an impediment and requires some sort of buffer before you can address it later down the path.

Part of the push too get me started came from a need to address my lack of online social interaction. In this day it is impossible to ignore active promotion without becoming a complete hermit. As much as I like being a Hermit that only focuses on my Artwork, it makes it very difficult when it comes time to try and sell the stockpile of paintings that threaten to bury me and the cats.
